Meeka hair chronicles
I have a mixture of my grandmother’s hair texture. It is fine to normal in thickness and the longest my hair has been is to my shoulder/ upper back ish…it is overall soft but can get hard 😜 or even thickened based on what products are used and how often/ lack of combing 😩🤷🏾😂
I do not like combing my hair. I do not like too many products or heat in my hair. As a teenager, my goal was to look good for Jesus so I think that was when I took my hair styles the most seriously. In my early twenties, as a bank teller i did my best to look neat and professional but we college student juggling work, classes and very active church schedule — hair care became a second priority.
When moving to Austin from NY, one of my prayers was for good hair care close to home! I did not drive and did not have a car. A church member who was very creative and stylish, gifted in hair took care of my mane. Crystal came to my apartment or I would go to her and she was allowed to style as she pleased. She would say, thank you for trusting me and allowing me to style your hair Tameeka. By the next year after I got married, I was tired of Deon’s arm pulling my locs while we slept AND I’ve always wanted short hairstyles — so I asked Crystal to cut it low. She was delighted but didn’t want to do a pixie so I had what I call a cute short bob. I loved it! I kept it short for years and braided it sometimes.
Pregnancy and postpartum gave my hair a thicker boost and darker sheen! It was a bit longer now but I wanted to keep it shorter than shoulder length. I had another stylist, professional salon care with Sherri. She also took great care of my hair. We did finger wave for a wedding. We added weave. We did a bob and semi Shirley temple curls 😂🤣
As long as my hair is clean and manageable, I am happy. Doing the work to maintain it is a challenge — or I’m just lazy and miss my mom and cousin doing it for me.
Fast forward to today, I decided to flat iron my hair again for a softer and straighter look. I started and by the time I took a break to prepare Timothy’s dinner, it was back to curly poof 🤣😂😩😩 what’s the use!!
So I retwisted and then semi cockscrew them at the prompting of the Holy Spirit as I listen to Cece Winans audio book Believe For It!! So good.
