Watch “Toddler milestones- Timothy is riding his radio flyer tricycle by himself!” on YouTube
This is a very extra special moment and lesson for me. I did not have my daddy around to teach me how to ride as a little girl. I don’t think my mom knows how to ride. And as I grew older I did not want to learn how to ride a bike because I was afraid of falling. I did not want any marks or scars and bruises so I mostly played inside. I was a timid child.
When Timothy’s partenal grandma visited, she kept saying roll for me roll for me, when you gonna turn over or when you gonna crawl and at moments I would think oh no maybe he is a late bloomer— then he turned a year and some would ask is he walking yet?? Aww the questions and genuine concerns did become overwhelming at times.
He started walking in June 2018 at 13 months old! Of course we celebrated by going to chick fil a đ
Then at around 2 years old or more he was gifted a radio flyer wagon and tricycle from the generous Pryors. Since then, Deon and I have been doing our best to teach him how to ride. I was worried when I saw toddlers who looked younger were already pedaling around with no help from their parents. Timothy would mostly pedal backwards it seemed. And I wasn’t sure if I was showing him the right way since I never learned how to ride.
Today after driving around a bit in his Mercedes (3rd birthday gift from my aunty Petra in NY), he got on his bike and just began to ride. Although not totally surprising, it was a WOW moment. He has been improving but I was sure he would get on and complain about being stuck…today he did not fuss at all. He just pedal around and around as if he has been riding for years.
Timothy’s confidence and willingness to get on his bike taught me to keep teaching him even when it seems like he is not getting something. Even when I am not sure of myself. I look forward to more lessons when we can use the saying- it’s as easy as riding a bike.
